Chasuble

Third quarter of the 18th century silk gros de tours embroidered in silk; 114x73.5 cm Church of Santa Maria a Bagnano.
This marvelous silk chasuble, with an ivory background is characterized by its multicolored embroideries carried out with the uncommon floscio stitch technique. Charming birds are set within slender plant motifs, among which is a peacock with its clear and explicit oriental reference.
In 1929, this delicate vestment was subjected to a “restoration” intervention by the Fiorentine nuns of’ Borgo Ognissanti, who carefufly, following a rather widespread practice in the liturgical milieu, transferred the embroideries on the current background.
